Celebrating Dental Assistants Recognition Week
Alexandria Smiles gives a hearty ‘thank you’ to dental assistants everywhere…
but especially to those in our office!
Today we’re recognizing four key players on our team: Cindy, Ann, Jordyn, and MaKenna! These ladies are Alexandria Smiles’ Dental Assistants and—in honor of Dental Assistants Recognition Week the first week of March (7th-13)—we wanted to say a big THANK YOU to them for their hard work and dedication.
A good dentist’s office can’t run properly without the help from Dental Assistants. Their ability to effectively work and communicate with those of all backgrounds allows them to ease patients’ anxieties while playing a crucial role in dentistry practices everywhere.
The History of Dental Assistants
Dating back to 1885, the first Dental Assistant was actually the wife of noted dentist and X-ray pioneer, Dr. Charles Edmund Kells. Noting her significant help, the doctor went on to hire a teenager named Malvina Cuerina as his official assistant. At Malvina’s employment, she is commonly regarded as the first dental assistant. In fact, for her role in the dental community was honored when she was in 80’s.
Growth in the Industry Provided Growth for the Profession
Known then as ‘Ladies in Waiting,’ these assistants typically helped mix materials and clean the examining rooms. However, as times changed, their duties continued to grow until they became the Dental Assistants we know today.
While their titles may lead one to believe that they are the same as hygienists, the two roles have entirely different responsibilities and tasks, such as:
Sterilizing Equipment
Processing X-rays
Scheduling appointments and managing the front office
Taking vitals and impressions of patients teeth
Organizing dental records
Handing out ‘Goody Bags’ at the end of each visit
As all of these jobs are essential to maintaining a good dental practice, educating patients on their oral health is what many assistants will tell you is the most rewarding part of the job. Working with patients of all varieties, displaying the ability to be creative and educational is a notable plus that enhances the dental experience. Don’t be surprised if you hear some wild facts from them like:

So, the next time you’re in the dentist’s chair, ask your Dental Assistant for some fun facts. What they tell you might be more interesting than you expect.
Saying ‘Thank You’ to Our Dental Assistants
No matter the age, gender, or race, all patients who enter a dentist’s office desire a nice smile and healthy teeth. While every role in an office shines in their own way, Dental Assistants are often the ones you see last; their smile ending each visit on a friendly and positive note.
